There's A Time for Us

Remember the classic song from West Side Story - "There's a Time for us.  Someday a time for us"?

I recently discovered that this site - along with all the other squarespace.com domains - will be out of action between 1.30am and 3.00am on Monday the 1st October.  But take heart all you British, European and Asian insomniacs, because this refers to EST - or Eastern Standard Time - which is what they call their clock system in parts of the United States of America - including New York and Miami, which, though thousands of miles apart, share the same time.  Whereas the city of Chicago, which is geographically much nearer to New York is on CST - or Central Standard Time, which is an hour behind EST (which is five hours behind GMT and six hours behind BST)  There's A Time For US (sic) - Am I losing you?

The Old Hack is someone who takes a week to adjust to the daylight saving idea each time the clocks go backward or forward an hour.  The concept of having multiple time zones within one country is therefore a little hard to grasp.  Salt Lake City in Utah and Denver in Colorado are both on MST (Mountain Time) which is different again.  Things were just so much easier when the Earth was flat, don't you agree?

So instead of informing you that this blog will be unavailable between 1.30am and 3.30am (EST) on the first of October, I am obliged to tell those of you in the appropriate region of the United States that this is the case.  For those of you outside the EST zone, here is a link to a useful world clock. Be careful, though - it is interactive and can seriously damage your eyesight, or your brain if your hand is a little shaky on the mouse.

For my British readers, the site will be down between the hours of 7.30am and 10.30am on Monday 1st October.  If you are in the habit of reading this blog over your morning cornflakes, I apologise unreservedly for the inconvenience.

Now there's another thing.  Here in Britain it is 01/10/2007, but across the pond it's 10/01/2007, which is but a distant memory for us Brits.  There's a time for us.
